THE EVERLASTING ORDER
Kings and Priests part 3
We left off in the last article “Kings and Priests part 2 – A Prophetic Shift mentioning the Tabernacle of David as a “Temporary Prophetic Order of Ministry”. In this series, we’ve traced God’s desire for a personal relationship with His people, from the First Order’s direct worship to David’s Tabernacle, a temporary prophetic shift. Though David’s Tabernacle fell into ruin, God wasn’t finished. He promised through Amos, “In that day I will raise up the tabernacle of David, which has fallen down, and repair its damages; and I will rebuild it as in the days of old” (Amos 9:11, NKJV).
This pointed to a new, everlasting order of worship, free from the Levitical Priesthood’s rituals, centered on worship in spirit and in truth (John 4:24, NKJV)In this series, we’ve traced God’s desire for a personal relationship with His people, from the First Order to David’s Tabernacle. Now, we explore the final shift through the New Covenant which established a new order, named after Melchizedek, the priest-king who prefigured Jesus. That is why we call it The Order of Melchizedek.
In Amos 9:11 the Prophet said,
“In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old:”
The Lord prophesied that He would restore the Tabernacle of David. The Lord no longer wanted a “Substitute Order of Worship” consisting of offerings of the blood of bulls and goats and other such things.
The Lord desires “Worship in Spirit and in Truth”! Even though the Levitical Priesthood still functioned, The Lord was no longer in it! This truth leads us to this message “The Everlasting Order”!
David’s Tabernacle pointed to a better way, fulfilled in the new covenant Jesus established. Jesus’ institution of the new covenant fulfilled David’s Tabernacle, removing the veil and making all believers priests.
The Everlasting Order of Ministry
Jesus instituted this everlasting order at the Last Supper: “While they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them and said, ‘Take, eat; this is My body.’ Then He took the cup, and when He had given thanks He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. And He said to them, ‘This is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many’” (Mark 14:22-24, NKJV).
This new covenant, sealed in Jesus’ blood, fulfilled David’s Tabernacle, removing the veil and making all believers priests. The Levitical Priesthood, an inferior substitute, was obsolete, as Jesus prophesied the temple’s destruction (Matthew 24:2, NKJV), fulfilled in 70 AD when the Romans razed it. The writer of Hebrews calls this “the blood of the everlasting covenant” (Hebrews 13:20, NKJV), a better covenant in every way.
In Hebrews 13:20 the writer calls it an “Everlasting Covenant”;
“May the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant make you perfect in every good work…”
There is now a New Covenant with a “New and Everlasting Order of Ministry”. David’s Tabernacle foreshadowed it as a “Temporary Prophetic Order of Ministry”. Jesus has fixed it now FOREVER BY instituting it through His Blood. The Levitical priesthood is completely removed now. In God’s Eyes, it had been over for hundreds of years even though they were still offering sacrifices every day. They were simply “the blind leading the blind”.
Jesus prophesied about the temple saying that not one stone would be left standing on another and in 70AD while the Priests were offering sacrifices the Romans came in and destroyed the temple and it has never been restored.
The Book of Hebrews talks about the New Covenant REPLACING The Law in chapters 8 and 13. When Jesus instituted The New Covenant and sealed it in His Blood the Old Order was no longer valid. The New Covenant in Jesus’s blood was the Prophetic Fulfillment of the Worship in David’s Tabernacle. The New and Everlasting Covenant is a BETTER COVENANT in every way.
God is no longer interested in the Levitical Priesthood… Remember, it was never His Original Intention and it was an inferior order. He wanted a Kingdom of Priests and a Holy Nation.
The old has been replaced with the new. But don’t think that God has forgotten the Jewish people. He still loves them for the sake of Abraham, Isaac and David but He does not want to restore that Old System. It is finished and to reinstitute the “Old Order” would be a smack in the face of Jesus.
So, like the Levitical Priesthood, the Third Order has a name…
It’s called The Order of Melchizedek.
Hebrews 7:11-17 (ISV) “Now if perfection could have been attained through the Levitical priesthood—for on this basis the people received the Law—what further need would there be to speak of appointing another kind of priest according to the order of Melchizedek, not one according to the order of Aaron? 12 For when a change in the priesthood takes place, there must also be a change in the Law.
(So, The Mosaic Law is now over. Some will ask “What about the 10 commandments?” Well, the principles are still the same. You shouldn’t steal, etc. and you should still love your neighbor.)
13 The person we are talking about [Jesus] belonged to a different tribe, and no one from that tribe has ever served at the altar. 14 For it is obvious that our Lord was a descendant of Judah, and Moses said nothing about priests coming from that tribe. (Jesus was born to the tribe of Judah the tribe of praise) 15 This point is even more obvious in that another priest who is like Melchizedek has appeared. 16 He was appointed to be a priest, not on the basis of a regulation concerning his ancestry, but rather on the basis of the power of an indestructible life. 17 For it is declared about him, "You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek."
Under the Mosaic Covenant, a new High Priest came into power each time the old one died. But Jesus is and will always be our High Priest forever!
The New Testament Church was established after The Order of Melchizedek when The Lord Jesus raised up His Apostles to spread the Gospel of the Kingdom throughout all the earth. Jesus is the Chief (High) Priest over us. Therefore, we are all Priests of God under Him now!
Every Christian called God their Father because Jesus called us brothers and sisters…
Hebrews 2:10-18 (NLT2)
“God, for whom and through whom everything was made, chose to bring many sons into glory. And it was only right that he should make Jesus, The Captain of their Salvation, a perfect Leader through his suffering. 11 So now Jesus and the ones he makes holy have the same Father. That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them his brothers and sisters. 12 For he said to God, “I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters. I will praise you among your assembled people.” 13 He also said, “I will put my trust in him,” that is, “I and the children God has given me.” 14 Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. 15 Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying. 16 We also know that the Son did not come to help angels; he came to help the descendants of Abraham. 17 Therefore, it was necessary for him to be made in every respect like us, his brothers and sisters, so that he could be our merciful and faithful High Priest before God. Then he could offer a sacrifice that would take away the sins of the people. 18 Since he himself has gone through suffering and testing, he is able to help us when we are being tested.”
Jesus suffered temptations just like we do. He got tired and weary and upset just like we do too. He felt every human emotion just like us so He could be a merciful and faithful High Priest before God. In this way, He could offer a perfect sacrifice unto God. This is the reason why He knows how to help those who are going through suffering and testing now. As we see in Psalms 46:1 “The Lord is a very present help in a time of trouble”.
The Lord went through many things, but he brought mankind back to His original intentions. This was a step beyond individuals calling on Him on their own. He wanted an entire Nation of Priests. We have moved on from the old days of Adam and Seth where people called on the name of the Lord for themselves. Today we are a family, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, and together we make up the Body of Christ.
Every Believer can still go to God for themselves…
But now, we can also go together as a family!
God’s Original Intention Was Now Fulfilled!
Look at what The Lord tells us in 1 Peter 2:9 (ESV) “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light to the Praise of His Name!”
We are a New Race… because we are Born Again!
We are now a Kingdom of Priests… a Royal Priesthood
We are a Holy Nation… we are “Set Apart” for God’s Will in the earth
There is so much richness in the New and Everlasting Order of Worship called “The Order of Melchizedek”.
Each week I plan on expanding upon the truths within it and opening up your understanding to what lies ahead for those who “Press into the High Calling of God”.
How will you embrace your role in this everlasting order?
